Does Reading-Aloud Training Facilitate the Improvement of English Stress-Timed Rhythm?: A Comparison Between Repeating and Parallel Reading
Basic considerations of affective factors that impede learners’ enjoyment of pairwork

要旨： This study attempts to clarify the inner circle of learners who avoid or unwillingly participate in pair work and group activities. In the theoretical framework of second language acquisition anxiety, a 51―item questionnaire composed of eight different components was compiled and two research questions were established: 1. What is the relationship between enjoyment of pair work and affective factors? 2. What affective factors influence the enjoyment of pair work and to what extent? In order to address the research questions, exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis and multi-regression analysis were conducted. The results of the study, contrary to expectations, revealed that anxiety-related factors have little or no influence on learners’behavior with respect to pair work. The study findings demonstrate that a supportive environment has the significantly strongest influence on the behavior.

要旨： 人間が大量の視覚情報から必要な情報を選択処理して行動に移すには注意と呼ばれる認知制御機構を用いる。注意研究は課題切り替えパラダイムに基づいてきた（Kiesel et al., 2010）。Taube and Segalowitz（2005）はこのパラダイムを利用して言語の認知制御過程を探索した。概して，課題が切り替わると繰り返される時に比べて，反応潜時は長くなりエラーの割合も高くなる。切り替えと繰り返しの時間差が課題切り替えコストの操作的定義である。本研究では，日本人初級英語学習者による句レベルと文レベルの屈折形態素切り替えコストを考察する。句レベルの切り替えコストの方が文レベルより長いことが明らかとなった。句レベルでは形態素の切り替えに焦点が当てられるのに対して，文レベルでは意味に焦点が当てられることが，その違いを生み出していると思われる。
How Reading Motivation Enhancement Is Related to Reading Fluency: An Analysis in 10-Minute Extensive Reading

要旨： The present study is a practical research about 10-minute extensive reading-the participants read graded readers for their level for ten minutes. The purpose of the study is two fold. One is to investigate if written feedback has effects on affective factors (reading motivation) and cognitive factors (reading speed, reading comprehension and accumulated words read). The other one is to explore the correlation between the two factors. The result of the study is as follows. The recipients of the motivation enhancing involvement improved the relationship with the instructors, developed appreciation for reading, improved the reading speed and increased the total number of words read. They savored reading and increased the amount of reading. On the other hand, they showed no gains in autonomy and competence. They decreased the sense of control over choice of books they wanted to read. The confidence in extensive reading remained intact. The factors behind this deficit might be that feedback was small in number. More comments on post-reading reports should have been given and more feedback should have been given about extensive reading attitude. Ineffectiveness in autonomy and competence support might be the reason why intrinsic motivation did not show significant increase.
Factors Affecting the Acquisition of L2 Verb Subcategorization Frames

要旨：The knowledge of the L2 verb subcategorization frame is extremely important for fluent and creative production of language. However, studies on the acquisition of this knowledge have lagged far behind those on other lexicogrammatical knowledge such as collocations and formulaic language. The present study aimed to reveal the factors that affect the acquisition of verb subcategorization knowledge by conducting an acceptability judgment task with a six-point Likert scale. Japanese university participants (N = 211) were instructed to judge whether the use of underlined verb phrases was grammatically correct (e.g., He replied her letter). The acceptability ratings were analyzed with four lexical predictors as well as participant-related and task-related variables. The study revealed that while verb frequency did not account for the acquisition, learners were more sensitive to verb subcategorization frequency in judging correct usage as their proficiency increased. Subcategorization frame error types was also a significant contributor to the acquisition.
